Winning young footballers from St. Michael s Gaelic Football Club were told at a special medals presentation that they made the future of the club look bright.

The Under-12 county champions who went unbeaten throughout 2007 were given their medals on the occasion. So too were the Under-16 B team who won the City League.

Special guest on the night was Eoghan Buckley, the first ever St. Michael s player to captain a Cork Minor Munster Championship winning team. Addressing the younger players, he said that he recalled sitting where they were on medals nights and looking up at senior players whom he admired. “The thing that keeps me going is the great crew here and the coaches training us. They deserve the biggest recognition. Without them I would be nowhere”, Eoghan told the young players and the crowd who gathered to honour them.

Master of ceremonies for the night, Pat Giltinan, chairman of underage football at St. Michaels paid tribute to both teams. He had this to say about the Under-12 lads: What a team! They have great spirit. They enjoy their training. Hopefully, they will develop into a very good football team in the future.

Patrick Conway, chairman of the executive committee congratulated both teams who had brought some glory to the club during 2007. Mr Conway said the club was going to have a bright future if the talent that was fostered at underage level came through to the senior panel in years to come.

Referring to the new development in Mahon, he said that the new clubhouse would be completed by April while the pitches were already in use. The chairman called on all of those present to contribute some time to the development of the club so that all of the responsibilities going forward would not fall on a few shoulders. “It is there for us now to take it forward”, he said.

Eoghan Buckley was presented with a plaque to honour his achievements. Chairman of the adult football committee, Gerry Lenihan, congratulated all off the young players and team captains, David Dineen (U-12s) and Martin Lyons (U-16). Mr Lenihan said that Eoghan Buckley already had achieved what eluded most players in a lifetime of playing football and that despite Eoghan’s commitment to the Cork team he had always found time to be present for St. Michaels Club.

St. Michael s player, Brian Lombard, who is now part of the Under-21 Cork football panel presented the medals to the Under-16 team.

Pat Giltinan thanked all of those who had helped with the teams during the year and he thanked Scally s Supervalu for their continued support.
