Under 12 team visit the Kingdom!!

On Saturday 26th June our U-12 footballers travelled to Killarney to play Dr. Crokes in a challenge game.

Crokes are the strongest U-12 team in Kerry but on this occasion they were short a lot of their regulars and St Michaels were too strong for them. There were great displays from Cian Murphy in goal, Eoin O'Sullivan, Tom Lenihan, Daniel Cullen and Sean O'Callaghan in defence, while Adam Coughlan and David Hogan lorded it in midfield. Up front Tadgh Deasy, David Hurley and new recruit Simon Falvey caught the eye. We would like to thank Dr. Crokes for looking after us and they promised to come up later in the year with a full squad to gain revenge!

After the game we went on to Ross Castle where we boarded two boats for an hour and a halfs trip through the three lakes in absolutely stunning settings surrounded by the mountains. It was so warm that all the lads decided to join Tom Lenihan in the lake after Hega had thrown him in (for too much lip!) The crack was great and afterwards we hiked back about three miles to where our bus was waiting.

All this activity worked up a serious appetite so next stop was McDonalds in Killarney before heading back home. A great day was had by all and particular thanks to Vincent Casey, chairman of Dr. Crokes who arranged everything for us.

So enjoy the few weeks off now lads as will Paul, Pat, Eric, Martin and Gerry and see you all towards the end of August.

A brief note about the Golf Classic on its 15th  anniversary

St Michaels Golf Classic began in 1995 when club chairman at the time John Murphy needed to raise much needed finance for the benefit of the club’s many young teams. Organized as an all-day event originally at Harbour Point Golf club, (before it closed a few years ago), it now takes place at Douglas Golf Club every year since.

As well as being a great social day, it has become an occasion where many past players of St Michaels reunite to support the players of today.

It is a hugely successful fundraiser for the club. Money raised (from team entry costs and other donations) is put back into the club to support the welfare and development of the club’s players. It is the longest running annual fundraiser in the club’s history.

The Golf Classic is efficiently organized by a special Golf Committee, which is chaired by Bernard Hurley.

Committee Members: Sean Horgan, Barry Humphries(Treasurer), John Murphy, Cliff Notley, John O Driscoll and Noel Murphy.

Thanks for your support

A very big thank you from St. Michaels to participants past and present. Through your support this event has become an excellent day of sport and fundraising.

Corporate Involvement

The tournament has had tremendous support from the local business community throughout its 15-year history. Companies or indeed individuals can sponsor a tee/ green as well as /instead of playing in the tournament. We thank those who have participated over the years and welcome your support in the future.

Premier Intermediate Football Championship

St. Michaels 1:10   Grenagh 0:10

Blarney May 16th 2010

Neither side could have wanted better weather to kick off the championship season as the sun shone, with a slight wind at the Blarney GAA pitches on Sunday. St. Michaels were entering into the game with a few players carrying injuries, aware that a loss could propel the club into a relegation dogfight. This was a Michaels side brimming with talent with numerous Minor and Under 21 County medals attached to several key members of the squad, not just the starting fifteen. Michaels started with a side full of experience and a welcome return from injury for Brian Lombard . The Blackrock side started the brighter than their opponents with centre forward Eric Hegarty pointing the way forward. A period of ball fumbling and a mysterious slippery ball attacked both sides ability to gain control of the game but points from Derek Gosnell, Michael Mulconroy and Eric Hegarty once again ensured an advantage over the country club.

Grenagh’s advancement through the scoreboard and on the pitch came courtesy of Tom Kenny, whose ability shone throughout their midfield. However, the lead for the city club was extended through Eric Hegarty finishing a fine working movement with a goal after some good running from Eoghan Buckley and sub Aaron Giltinan. The runs from midfield and the half forward line were electric and provided a breathtaking account of how St. Michaels have the players to play fast free flowing football.

Such free passing play was seen again as a penalty in the dying minutes was won after a link-up play between Mulconroy and Hegarty. Hegarty duly slotted the ball over the bar to give Michaels a 1:7 to 6 points lead at half time. A worry for Grenagh, and consequently Cork hurling, was an injury to Tom Kenny who did not reappear for the second half.

Without their talismanic midfielder, Grenagh started with extra vigour to seal the first score of the second half. A period of Grenagh dominance coupled with a Michaels inability to take advantage of scoring opportunities both in play and from the mark brought Grenagh back within touching distance of the Dazzlers. A clear goal chance fell at the feet of Mark Drummond, only for the cruel twist of fate to curl the ball outside the post rather than inside, accompanied with a chorus of groans from the embankment. A scrappy few minutes on the ball for both sides resulted in tempers fraying. Bookings were handed out to the Grenagh back line for unnecessary aggression when conceding frees.

A key point in the game was the bizarre and unexplained booking of Conor Kilcoyne after being struck by his opposing player. The blood pouring out of his nose clearly was not enough for the referee who yellow carded both players. Successive wides from Grenagh showed their nervousness and lack of leadership as the Saints began get a grip on the situation. Shane O’Sullivan’s solo run and high looping point encapsulated the renewed vigour of a team not ready to go down yet. A final effort from Eric Hegarty ensured a three point margin victory for the Dazzlers.  Elated scenes from the Saints were tempered by the hostility of the Grenagh players until the referee and common sense at the match being actually over prevailed. A fine performance and a great victory from a team that seems to have moulded well together and has an impressive defensive resolve flowing through them. A particular mention must go to Diarmuid Crowley who was simply immense in his position at corner back and snuffed out any threats down his flank.

Speaking after the match, selector Alan Delaney was overjoyed at the victory. “We were very confident at half-time that we had what was needed to pull through. I got slightly worried at the start of the second half but the lads dug in hard in a very tough physical game. I think the referee had a rather good match and was fair to both sides,” said Delaney. Asked about his hopes for the next round he replied that he was confident. "Hopefully, we’ll have a bit of a break so that we can get over injuries and players on holidays but overall I don’t see how we can’t be confident after a good performance like we’ve just seen.”

His colleague Gary McPolin was similar in his praise for the players: “We worked hard throughout the year and throughout the game, even though we’ve had players carrying injuries. We buckled slightly at the start of the second half but the lads showed great resolve and there was a tremendous effort from everyone. From one to nineteen they proved themselves today.”

Top scorer Eric Hegarty echoed the management team’s sentiments and stated that the team has some "great players and it's heartening to see the young lads getting to show their worth. We fought hard to prevent them from scoring and picked up some good scores ourselves. For the first time in a long time a St. Michaels team has great strength and depth within its squad."

Scorers for St. Michaels: Derek Gosnell 0:01, Michael Mulconroy 0:02, Shane O’Sullivan 0:01, Eric Hegarty 1: 6 (2 from frees, 1 from Penalty)

St. Michaels Line-up : Alan Deasy, Colm O’Brien, Richard Dineen, Diarmuid Crowley, Conor Kilcoyne, Brian Lombard, Brian Ahern, Mark Russell, Shane O’Sullivan, Ian Giltinan, Eric Hegarty, Eoghan Buckley, Michael Mulconroy (C), Derek Gosnell, Mark Drummand.

                Subs: A. Giltinan for M.Russell, S. O’Keeffe for I. Giltinan, C. Tobin for C. O’Brien.
